Folding Phones: The Future or Fad?

We’ve all heard the rumours about foldable phones, for some time now in fact, but Samsung is set on making that rumour a reality with its new Galaxy X. Now don’t get it mistaken, a foldable phone and a flip phone are completely different. So allow us to clarify.

Samsung has had its sights set on a smartphone with a foldable screen for some time now, and because phones these days are mostly screens, it’s been broadly called a foldable phone.

Ok now that’s out of the way, why is a foldable phone such a big deal? Well firstly, it’s going to be the first of its kind. Yes, that’s right, there has never been a phone with a foldable screen, ever. Then there’s the fact that it’s a Samsung so at the very least it will be a powerful Android device capable of doing all the things Samsung has made a name for itself with, and it can fold.

Samsung has hinted at a November launch for the device, but so far the only confirmed thing is that it will launch in 2018. Considering there’s not much of 2018 left, we won’t have to wait too long to get a first glimpse at this brand new innovation in the Smartphone world.

So, after all that is said and done, what guarantees are there that the phone won’t simply become another gimmick? We need only think back to the time of Nokia, with gimmick phone after gimmick phone being released and how well loved some of their devices were, but that was a time for gimmicks when smartphones were in their infancy.

These days however, people want an amazing camera, high performance, long lasting, durable, stylish, handheld monster machine that could order you lunch with just a few clicks. Is that going to be the new foldable phone? As it stands, a screen that can fold is super cool, but is it just a gimmick? Definitely! Is it a gimmick that will prove its mettle, for that we’ll have to wait and see.

Folding phones and screens aside though, this is an exciting turning point for smartphones. In just a few years the technology behind these devices have accelerated to a point where anything is possible and if you can think it, you could possibly see it on a shelf sooner rather than later. So if you really think about it, the fad here is not about a folding screen, the fad is about innovation and that’s a fad we can all get behind.
