New Google Pixel 2 XL

Add the world’s foremost search engine, handheld technology we cannot live without and yourself - what do you get? If you said "Me holding the Google Pixel 2 XL” then you would be absolutely correct. The most recent smartphone offering from Google is as enticing as its predecessor, the Google Pixel 2, and with good reason considering the Pixel 2 XL aims to be on par with the likes of Samsung’s S8 and Apple’s iPhone X.

How do I look?

The design of the Google Pixel 2 XL is what we have come to expect since Samsung introduced their curved display, bezel-less S8 range and the likes of Apple followed suit. The Pixel 2 XL however is not bezel-less and that is not a bad thing. Unlike other smartphones that still have the bezels at the top and bottom, Google has opted to make full use of these areas by placing better than you’d expect speakers there. The display measures a whopping 6inches in total, which means it’s a bit on the bigger side of things, but in all fairness it is called the XL for a reason and the size just means more phone to be enjoyed.

I’m ready for my close-up…

Leave it to Google to create a smartphone that relies on software rather than super high megapixel camera’s to deliver amazing results and succeeds! Thanks to the smart guys at Google, the Pixel 2 XL comes with a nifty feature called Auto-HDR+ for its 12MP shooter, which basically takes multiple snaps for every one snap you do, combines the results for the best quality and gives you the a photo that resembles that of a professional camera with exquisite detail. That makes life easier doesn’t it?

Curtains up, show time!

The Pixel 2 XL isn’t just looks and amazing software, in terms of hardware that makes the show go on, it packs a punch too! The battery is a performer, with a day’s usage being easily possible for those that rely on the phones throughout the day. For those times that do require a charge, you can expect just 70 minutes of your day to be taken up in getting your Pixel 2 XL back up to 100%. Impressive, yes!

Post show remarks?

Overall, the Pixel 2 XL is a reliable smartphone that will perform as expected and if you let it, will exceed some of your expectations too. The practical approach shines through in how Google opted to make use of otherwise wasted space with the speaker packing bezels. The screen size impresses and while a bit on the bigger side, those that don’t mind the Galaxy Note 8 will have no issues. The back casing is practical, with a glass/aluminium pairing that looks appealing but serves a purpose thanks to the chalkboard type coating over the aluminium that provides grip. In our humble opinion, the Google Pixel 2 XL is one of those smartphones that hasn’t yet peaked the interests of the Samsung and Apple faithful, but should, thanks to the attention to detail and impeccable performance delivered by this device.
