Spotify On Its Way to South African Audiences

The world’s largest music subscription streaming service, Spotify, looks all set to make its big entry into the South African market. The service currently has more than 159 million users, with 71 million of those being premium subscribers.

Rumours, which had been circulating since 2014, of an official South African launch were confirmed in September 2017 when a job post was discovered. The job in question required a senior editor and music programmer for South Africa.

The company will be holding a press conference in Johannesburg on 13 March 2018, where the news is expected to be made official. South Africans however, being no stranger to ingenuity, have been able to stream the service as premium subscribers in other markets, especially the United States of America.

The global music streaming service currently boasts a 30 million song strong catalogue with more than 20 000 songs being added daily. While pricing details are yet to be announced, current US pricing costs US$9.99/month for individuals, or $14.99/month for a family plan of up to six users.

A quick conversion puts it at just over R118 for individuals and R178 for the family plan. However, because South Africa has such a wide range of streaming services already and premium family subscriptions hitting the R89.99pm mark, Spotify could very well follow suit to remain competitive.

Not long to go until all the details will be revealed so keep an eye out if you’re a music streaming fan.
