Android Inc. was co-founded by Andy Rubin (now director of mobile platforms at Google.) and bought by Google in July 2005. At the time iPhone was being launched and rumours about the Google Phone (or G-Phone) were circulating. No one anticipated that Google was working on a whole new type of phone operating system.

This was also the beginning of the Open Handset Alliance (OHA). The OHA is an alliance of technology and mobile companies (including: HTC, LG, Samsung, T-Mobile and 84 other names) who have come together to accelerate innovation in mobile. It was the OHA which developed Android.

Together with the OHA Google unveiled Google Android in 2007. Android promised to enable developers to create exciting mobile applications which would take full advantage of all a handset has to offer.

Android, the friendly robot

The degree of control a developer has over his apps is far less limiting than ever before. Applications can be built to take advantage of phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera. This degree of control allows developers to create apps of great benefit to users.

Naming convention

Android uses an alphabetical naming convention with a sweet theme: Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Eclair (2.0–2.1), Froyo (2.2–2.2.3), Gingerbread (2.3–2.3.7), Honeycomb (3.0–3.2.6), Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0–4.0.4), Jelly Bean (4.1–4.3), and KitKat (4.4)
