BlackBerry Quits Making Smartphones
BlackBerry to quit making smartphones after 14 years as industry leader

BlackBerry has been synonymous with smartphone technology and leadership, even if you have not owned a BlackBerry device for a long time, or even considered them when choosing a cell phone deal, they have at least no doubt been part of the top devices in your price range.

That is because BlackBerry has had over 14 years of experience when it comes to manufacturing a cellular phone for every client type in the market.

BlackBerry devices have offered consumers excessively cheap internet and data packages not to mention unprecedented email security (the reason why BlackBerry was the device of choice for businesses for an unrivaled amount of years).

Heavy rivalry in the cellular market lead by giants such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Sony have made it increasingly difficult for BlackBerry to gain its market share back. Once an industry leader, BlackBerry is now not in the top 10 chosen manufacturers.

"Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.” - Chief Executive Officer, John Chen

Not all sad news

Less than 100 jobs are predicted to be lost at BlackBerry who will now focus on software rather than hardware.

What this means is that BlackBerry will focus on the key differentiation that set them apart for so many years, in other words: security. BlackBerry will focus on building applications and an extra safe version of Google Android.
