New Data Regulations in South Africa 2019
22 Jan 19

Good news, everybody! The #DataMustFall campaign looks like it’s about to pay off. That’s good news for everyone with a smartphone!

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA for those of you too lazy to read the full name) is about to put its new data regulations into effect on 28 February 2019.

"So, what are we getting out of this?” you might ask. Let me fill (or rather "Phil”) you in about what ICASA’s new regulations mean for those of you, who are looking for data or cell phone contract deals.

You are now entitled to timely data usage notifications.

We’ve all been there: you’re in the middle of paying your bills at the eleventh hour, when suddenly your web browser brings up its frustrating T-Rex character with its useless little arms to let you know you know that you longer have data to surf the net. A little warning would have been nice, hey?

Well, now you can count on being timeously notified when your data has drained to the 50%, 80% and 100% marker. This should give you a clearer idea of when you should stop watching cat videos on your YouTube app - or rather the sign that you should just switch to the more data-friendly YouTube Go.

It’s your data, so you now have the option to roll it over month to month.

If Confucius were alive today, we could count on him to have coined the following sage advice on your data: Use it or lose it! Losing your remaining data at the end of the month has been par for the course from the start. You might be the sort of person, who is pretty careful with their data usage to begin with, and seeing your remaining megs circle the proverbial drain is a special kind of hell. If that’s you, you’ll probably be especially keen on ICASA’s regulations, which include that communication providers have to offer an option to rollover unused data.

Data truly is the new currency. You can now send data to a friend.

Your service provider absolutely must offer you the option to transfer data to other users within your network. Unfortunately, you now officially have no excuse to get you out of speaking to your mom more often.

No more unexpected data bills. You will always be in the know.

There’s nothing more terrifying than opening your cell phone bill at the end of the month and seeing more digits than you expected. That’s when you know you didn’t just overdo your data usage that month – you’ve overdone the overdoing it!

Now you can stop living in fear of unexpected out-of-bundle data costs!. The new data regulations prevent your service provider from charging you the pricey out-of-bundle rates without first humbly requesting permission from your esteemed self.

Once these new regulations take effect, there will never be a better time to take out a cell phone or data contract (or hey, why not both?). Check out Phonefinder’s phone contracts and Data Deals to find the data contract deal that ful-Phil-s all your wildest data dreams.

Finally Smart Phones have smart data regulations! #Datamustfall
