Phones to Smartphones to Phablets

A Phablet for every pocket.

Recently Apple launched two new Smartphones, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 plus. Besides some hardware spec differences the main difference is in the screen size. While the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5 inch screen (the Samsung Galaxy S 5 has a 5.1 inch screen) the iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch display.

The display size was a big leap for Apple who, until recently, was lagging behind in screen size offerings. Now one week after launching their new Smartphones the take-home message for Apple was in which model is outselling (in pre-orders) the other. Guess which model is outselling? That’s right, the bigger screen offering.

Large screens, called Phablets (combination of tablet and phone) have become increasingly popular over the years. Smartphones are less about actual "phones” and more about internet browsing. Making a call is so Nokia 3210. The phone of today needs to offer easy email use, a fantastic Facebook and Instagram user experience and a large screen for gaming. Therefore the bigger the screen the more practical the Smartphone (to a degree of course).

Apple rivals have known this for a while and have already managed to build up a sizable offering for their consumers, offering not just one Phablet device, but many devices to suit the user’s size preference. Samsung, HTC and LG have therefore been eating up the phablet market share for years. Now it’s Apples chance.
