Xiaomi In South Africa

Xiaomi is commonly referred to in China as "the Apple of China”. In this article we will explain why and why Xiaomi’s launch in South Africa is pretty exciting, and why you may want to consider one of their smartphone contract deals this year.

The Core Group (the group responsible for bringing Apple into South Africa) brought Xiaomi to South Africa in November 2015. The group have launched only two of the many Xiaomi devices, the devices on the South African shelves are the Xiaomi Redmi 2 (R1,999.00) and the Xiaomi Mi 4 (R3,799.00). These phones and their prices are set educate South African consumers about the Xiaomi philosophy which is that a smartphone should be highly durable, technologically advanced and not cost an arm and a leg.

The phone seems great and the prices are amazing - but where did Xiaomi come from? Well this truly is a fascinating story:

Xiaomi was founded in April 2010 by a Chinese man named Lei Jun. It remains a privately owned company with headquarters in Beijing China. Their first phone was released in 2011 and 14 years later they have become the 3rd biggest smartphone maker in the world. That’s some feat!

Xiaomi employs over 8000 employees worldwide.

The company became the most valuable technology company in 2014, with a total estimated valuation of more than US$46 billion. They are also the largest smartphone vendor in China, having overtaken Samsung in 2014. In fact the company is so highly valued that Xiaomi secured a domain name in April 2014. The domain name was mi.com and it remains the most expensive domain name ever bought in China. It went for UD$3.6 million.

Hugo Barra, "We are an internet and a software company much more than … a hardware company."

The cell phone maker has already made waves in China and India and they are set to take South Africa by storm. MTN have started selling the devices and their cell phone contracts connected to the Mi 4 and Redmi 2 have already been a huge hit on Phonefinder.

We wish Xiaomi good luck in South Africa, welcome to our pockets!
