The R5.5 Billion Cell C Deal
06 Oct 16

Cell C Sale to Blue Label Telecoms
45% of Cell C acquired for R5.5 billion by BLUE Label Telecoms

Cell C has been on the brink of selling a large proportion of its company for a long time. Initial speculations had Telkom purchasing a steak in the company, however that was a false speculation.

On Wednesday 5 October 2016 BLUE Label Telecoms acquired a large portion of Cell C (45%) for R5.5bn.

Cell C’s existing majority owner (3C Telecommunications) will reduce their current stake to 30%, Cell C management will acquire 10% and Albanta Trading another 15% of the cell phone network.

"Blue Label has, for a number of years, acted as one of the primary distribution channels for Cell C. This has resulted in the development of a strong relationship between Blue Label and Cell C," it said in Wednesday’s statement.

Cell C has over the years grown its base through a series of market leading changes such as free WhatsApp and lower data charges. This has seen the Cell C Subscriber base grow from 9-million in 2012 to more than 25-million in 2016.

"We believe that our coalition will be a global first that provides customers with an offering that includes banking, transacting, debit and credit cards, micro-finance, insurance, distribution of both airtime and electricity, web services, voice and data as well as access to low-cost handsets offering the most advanced functionality,"

Cell C makes up a large portion of searches on Phonefinder. Last month over 5000 queries were generated for Cell C deals. We hope that the new management continues the forward thinking strategies behind Cell C’s pricing structure and that the entire cellular industry in South Africa becomes more competitive as a result.
