Top Gaming Phones

Smartphone gaming has come a long way from the hours of Snake we played on our Nokia 3310s. But these days, it’s not just Candy Crush addicts getting their gaming fix on their smartphones; die-hard gamers can continue to build their EXP points on the road with these dedicated smartphones designed specifically to put the best gaming experience in your pocket.

Get your game face on with Phil and Phonefinder as we walk you through our top picks for gaming phones of 2019 (so far).

Honor View 20

Screen size: 6.4 inch
RAM: 6GB / 8GB
Resolution: 1080x2310
Storage: 128GB/256GB
OS: Android 9.0 Pie
Battery: 4000mAh
CPU: Kirin 980

Honor

You thought an iPhone would be on the top of this list, didn’t you? While Apple’s specs would typically be our go-to for a list like this, this new beauty has the honour (pun completely intended) of holding our top spot for gaming smartphones.

The Honor View 20 looks gorgeous no matter from what angle you’re looking at it. From the hole-punch camera in the 6.4-inch screen to the one-of-a-kind V-effect on the glass back-end, this is a stunner of note; but that’s nothing compared to what it’s got under the cover. The combination of a Kirin 980 CPU, RAM of up to 8GB, and a battery packing 4000mAh makes this smartphone an obvious candidate for any gamers looking to take their game mobile. While the screen can feature 1080p+ content – which, let’s face it, makes for some stellar graphics – it still falls a bit short of some its competitors who are offering FHD+ instead of QHD. However, the Honor View 20 does have an ace up its sleeve (a few in fact) in the form of several gaming-specific features like WiFi-signal boosters and an upcoming Gaming+ mode that will enhance the visual prowess of this mean machine without taking as great a toll on its already enormous battery.

Apple iPhone XS Max

Screen size: 6.5 inch
RAM: 4GB
Resolution: 1242x2688
Storage: 64GB / 256GB / 512GB
OS: iOS
Battery: 3174mAh
CPU: Apple A12 Bionic Hexa-core

iPhone

Of course, this wouldn’t be a list of powerhouse smartphones without an Apple iPhone in here somewhere. This bad boy sits close to the top of our list for obvious reasons. For one thing, this is the biggest screen ever seen on an iPhone, at 6.5 inch with a resolution of 1242x2688. While this screen is made more manageable by the almost non-existent bezel, to say this massive screen is something of a handful is definitely an understatement.

The iPhone XS Max has all the polish and design flourishes that we’ve come to expect from Apple without any of the rougher details of many Android phones. The only issue for an iOS device is that your gaming experience is limited by what you can find on the App Store.

This smartphone is the answer for those of you, who want to get their game on on an iOS with a large screen that’s not an iPad.

Samsung Galaxy S9

Screen size: 6.2 inch
RAM: 6GB
Resolution:
1440x2560
Storage: 64GB/128GB
OS: Android 8.0 Oreo
Battery: 3500mAh
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845

S9Galaxy

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus offers a more affordable and flexible gaming experience than the iPhone. By the way, these two incarnations of the Galaxy S9 can easily be lumped together as they basically offer the same high-level gaming experience, only on different screen sizes. And what an experience! With its powerful Snapdragon 485 processor and Adreno 360 graphics, this Samsung gives you quite an eyeful. Whether you’re playing a few rounds of Elder Scrolls Legends or a resource-intensive game like Fortnite, the S9 can run the gauntlet, even if you’re the kind to multitask. You can even make use of this Samsung’s patented Game Tools app, if you want to capture your gameplay.

The only way the Galaxy S9 falls short is in its battery power (or lack thereof), but thankfully the Samsung Galaxy S10 is on the scene now, doing everything the S9 can do and more and better. The verdict for the Samsung S9 as a gaming phone: excellent gaming experience, provided there’s a charger on hand.

Huawei Mate 20X

Screen size: 7.21 inch
RAM: 6GB
Resolution: 2244x1080
Storage: 128GB
OS: Android 9.0 Pie
Battery: 5000mAh
CPU: Kirin 980

Huawei

Huawei has made waves recently with the release of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but what many don’t know is that Huawei has followed up its latest powerhouse with the Huawei Mate 20X – its first gaming-focused smartphone. Much of the hardware specs mirror those of the Mate 20 Pro, but the major differences are seen in its titanic 7.21-inch, high-res, OLED display and its beast of a battery – a whopping 5000mAh! – with a new graphene-based cooling system that will keep you on your game wherever you go.

Huawei has promised gamers and tech-junkies a game controller that can be clipped onto the Mate 20X’s left side and will have a D-pad and an analogue stick. Talk about a power-up!

Xiaomi Black Shark

Screen size: 6 inch
RAM: 6GB / 8GB
Resolution: 2160x1080
Storage: 64GB / 128GB
OS: Android 8.0 Oreo
Battery: 4000mAh
CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845

Xiaomi fold

Chinese dark horse, Xiaomi, has been getting a lot of attention these days and no current list on gaming smartphones would be complete without mentioning their latest mobile powerhouse, specifically designed for gaming. The Xiaomi Black Shark is basically what you get when you shrink your gaming laptop down to smartphone size. However, unlike most gaming smartphones, the Black Shark is by far the cheapest on the market - for the moment.

And it is worth having in your gaming arsenal! This champion-maker is beefed up with a Snapdragon 845 chipset and a 4000mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0. Much like your gaming computer, this bad boy has a PC-like integrated cooling system to keep your phone from overheating over long gaming sessions. Kick your gaming experience up a notch with by hitting the "Shark Key” that unlocks the Black Shark’s high-performance mode. What’s more, Xiaomi is also selling a gamepad that attaches to the phone and runs on a 30-hour charge. In my humb-Phil opinion, this is the smartphone for any gamer-boy or gamer-girl worth their gems.
